Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Larry Summers is leaving the governing body at OpenAI, just days after a collection of emails between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became public.
Summers commented in a statement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have participated, excited about the prospects of the organization, and anticipate following their development".
Summers, who formerly presided over Harvard University, declared on Monday that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.

The freshly disclosed emails demonstrated that Summers corresponded with Epstein until the eve of Epstein's 2019 detention for accused human trafficking of underage individuals.
In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it respected his decision to step down.
"We value his numerous inputs and the insight he provided to the directors," the organization remarked.
Political Context
This announcement follows after the two houses of Congress decided on recently to approve a legislation that would compel the Department of Justice to release its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will afterward head to the office of President Trump for endorsement. The President has said he intends to sign the measure, after changing his stance on the subject following objections from his followers.

A collection of Epstein-related emails released by the House Oversight Committee days ago mentioned several well-known personalities in the billionaire's previous network, without suggesting any criminal activity by those figures.
The communications revealed that the professor and the financier regularly had dinners together, with he often trying to introduce the official to notable international personalities.

After the messages were shared with the public, Summers expressed he assumed "full responsibility for my ill-advised choice to continue communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".
He added that he wanted "to rebuild confidence and mend relationships with the people nearest to me".

The economist served in high-level positions under Democratic administrations; acting as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as leader of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.
He presided over the university from the early 2000s and remains a professor there. When announcing his departure from public commitments earlier on this week, he stated he would continue his educational duties.
Further Repercussions
Following his statement on Monday, the policy organization, a liberal research organization in the capital where he was a prominent member, announced that he was not associated with the institution.
Summers joined the board of the AI company, which makes the language model, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to remove its CEO the company leader.
