Hamilton Island, one of the Iconic Tropical Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Private Equity Firm.
A major tropical holiday destination situated on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based investment group for a sum reportedly valued at A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to continue the legacy and commitment that the Oatley family has established in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
Details of the Sale
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, pending customary regulatory approvals.
The sellers released a statement saying they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island spans over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly 30% of the land is developed, featuring a substantial array of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
The resort is described as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, supporting a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a broad network of regional partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and vintner, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's development boom initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that housed Australian vacationers from the outback and from the south.
Broader Portfolio and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in several countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
