The network's Premier New Show of This Year Secures a Major Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and supported its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family navigate their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
